About YUM!

YUM! is a healthy eating tracking and nutritional information app and responsive website designed for children. YUM! teaches children about nutrition and healthy eating habits to improve their performance in activities such as sports.

The Process

This user group brought a new perspective to take in to consideration. Children want to learn about nutrition and aren’t necessarily learning it elsewhere. Some users also didn’t understand the importance between nutrition and performance.

A quick ideation exercise developed ideas for how to address gaps identified in the competitive audit, the focus was specifically on tracking eating habits and simple nutrition information.

After ideating and drafting some paper wireframes, I created the initial screen designs on feedback and findings from the user research.

Insights

Adding Food
Users wanted the ability to add multiple foods of the same type

Recipes
Kids wanted access to easy
and healthy recipes they can prepare alone or with the
help of their parents.

Incentive
Children want an incentive to continue using the app.

Based on the insights from the usability studies, I applied design changes like adding icons as well as text and the ability to add multiple items of the same type.

Additional design changes included adding a button to view food journal as well as more accessibility concerns such as adding icons to food categories.

Final Iteration

The high-fidelity prototype followed the same user flow as the low-fidelity prototype, including design changes made after the usability study.
